About backpage.com

What's new?

Popular searches
Find out what people are looking for on backpage.com. For example: bartender is the most popular job search in Dallas and Astoria is a popular search for an apartment for rent in New York City.

New Cities
Well, we would like to get to a half billion page views a month. So, we decided to add 15 new cities to help us get there. Please let your friends know about the new cities. They are marked as “new here”.

Sponsor ad discounts
You can now get a 5% to 50% discount by running your sponsor ad for multiple weeks. The discount varies by category.

Sponsor ads increase results, increase referrals to your web site, can not be removed by the community, allow full use of html, and are targeted by category with high conversion rates. They also help pay for our staff and servers.

We are ready for a few more larger web sites to test a feed.
This would enable users to post content on your site and have it also appear on backpage. Content must be relevant, useful and user generated (versus machine generated). If you are interested, please email Support. Be sure to put "ATTN: Carl" in the text of your email.

Testimonials.

"Backpage is our main source of advertising and highly recommend it. It is well worth the cost and the new posting form should be easier for all to use. We plan to use Backpage for years to come. All the staff at Backpage have been very helpful in placing our ads."

"Just wanted to say thank you for such a great online community product. I LOVE the search features, the ease of use, the excellent categories -- giving me the ability to find whatever I want wherever I am in the country. I travel around the country a bunch for my workshops that I lead on Freedom, and as soon as I land, I log onto backpage.com and immediately get the lay of the land -- it's so wonderful -- it's like being a local!"

The Legend Of Backpage.

The story of backpage.com starts deep in the Appalachian Mountains some thirty-odd years ago. The year was nineteen hundred and dickety-four and back in them days, all it took to start something big was a boy and a dream. Unfortunately, in our case, the boy who done dreamt us up was of poor moral character and lost his dream in a game of cards back in nineteen hundred and skipity-eight. From there on out, the story gets to be pretty self-explanatory, but I suppose I can tell on up the rest of this obvious tale just one more time...for you.

Backpage.com is owned and operated by New Times / Village Voice Media. Our offices are located in the historic New Times building in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona.

Clearly not fit for regular interaction with other human beings, we found our offices moved into the basement not too long after the site really started to take off.

Most of our personal belongings such as family photos, a fish tank and even a pinball machine were either thrown away or replaced with poor, unreasonable cardboard facsimiles which we soon discovered to be not nearly as cool as their original counterparts.

Ten of us spend our days answering emails from users, blocking bad people from posting, moderating the forums and building improvements based on user suggestions and what we like to call "moments of clarity".

We entertain ourselves by breaking office supplies/equipment and playing Tiny Basketball.

"If the site is free, how are you able to pay your staff?" You seem to say.

Easy! We don't pay our staff. The staff works for the promise of temporary shelter from the harsh desert elements.

If we did pay our staff however, the funding would come from the small percentage of users who choose to upgrade their ads to print, sponsor and auto repost status as well as those who choose to post ads in our adult sections at a small fee. Fortunately for us, this money goes directly into funding the development of our experimental time distortion machine. I'm not really sure what it does yet but I plan to find out in the future.

Or in the past...

Traffic, users, and ad postings:

The site is growing at a double digit rate per month with about a million new postings per month. We continue to add new cities and are launched in about 100 cities. In some cities, we are bilingual and in some cities we have newspaper, radio station, and television station partners. Most new traffic comes from users like you who placing a link to backpage.com on their website or blogs.

Where we're headed:

With new markets launching every month, we're finding more and more loyal users who are helping us grow Backpage.com into one of the leading classified websites on the internet today. We will keep making improvements to the site based on 3 very simple goals:

  • Provide a site that is easy to navigate, easy to utilize, free of spam, clutter, scams and fun to use.
  • Provide excellent customer support by maintaining a close relationship with our users.
  • Provide a service that is unbiased when it comes to race, religion, political party, sexual orientation, age or gender.

  • Did we leave anything out?

If you have a question about the site that was not answered on this page, it's probably a really good question and we would love to hear it. Please send all queries to Support and we will do our best to answer your question promptly.

    Thank You for using Backpage.com!
